During the World Conference on Arts Education held in 2010 in Seoul, the UNESCO General Conference, at its 36th session in 2011, proclaimed the fourth week of May as the International Week of Arts Education.

The International Arts Education Week aims to raise the international community's awareness of the importance of arts education and strengthen their cooperation by promoting cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion.

On May 23, 2012, Irina Bokova, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), launched the International Arts Education Week at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

In 2022, the World Alliance for Arts Education and its members celebrates the international week of arts education, from 23 to 29 May, with the Theme "Arts Education and Peace" recognizing the importance of arts education in contributing to Education for peace.
