According to UNESCO, the deep interruptions that occurred in cultural life and in the respective lifes of artists and cultural agents, caused by the pandemic of COVID-19, revealed and "amplified the pre-existing volatility of the creative sector".

In this regard, UNESCO launched, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day 2020, a special edition of the Global Report series with a report entitled Freedom & Creativity , produced with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.

With this publication, UNESCO thus seeks to emphasize its awareness efforts, namely by highlighting the importance of freedom of artistic expression as a pillar of freedom of expression and placing artists and cultural professionals at the center of cultural policies and the development of cultural and creative industries .
