Torre de Belém

Diverse

Built between 1514 and 1519, and strategically located on the Tagus River to defend the bar, the Torre de Belém is a mix of medieval tower and modern bastion, where the artillery was placed.
In addition to its military function, it is a reference to King Manuel I's prestige (1469-1521), showing in its decoration the iconographic elements characteristic of the Manueline, including the first stone representation, known in Europe, of a rhinoceros.
