Os Impérios do Espírito Santo na Ilha Terceira

Route | Cultural Routes

The present route intends to present a significant set of Impérios of Terceira Island, around which one of the most rooted traditions in Azorean society develops. To these Impérios are also associated the popular celebrations par excellence of the Island.
Império is the name of a small temple of unique typology in the national architectural panorama where, between Easter Sunday and the Sundays of Pentecost or Trinity, the Holy Spirit is predominantly worshiped in the Azores. Around the Impérios the festivities of the Holy Spirit take place for several days. They are imbued with a charitable ideal and composed of a set of religious and profane ceremonies: the “coronation” of the Child Emperor, the parade of pageants and the meal of bread and meat.
