Museu da Terra de Miranda

Museums | Patrimony

The Museu da Terra de Miranda is an ethnographic museum located in the city of Miranda do Douro. The Museum is located in the historic center, and is installed in the old “Domus Municipalis” of the city, a building dating from the 17th century, who also served as a Municipal Prison until 1970. The creation of the Museum dates from 1982 and its implementation is due to Father António Maria Mourinho (1917-1996), enthusiast and connoisseur of Trás-os-Montes society and culture. In the museum's exhibition narrative, objects of an archaeological and historical character refer the visitor to the long times of the Miranda do Douro region, the specificity of the Mirandese language and the role played by it in the construction and external recognition of the cultural identity of the region, as well as the role once played by the city in maintaining border stability between Portugal and Spain.
