Igreja do Mosteiro de Leça do Balio

Monuments | Religious Architecture

The monastery of Leça do Bailio represents the first headquarters of the Order of the Hospital in Portugal, and together with the church constitutes one of the first Gothic buildings in the country of great quality and monumentality. With some elements of the first Romanesque building, this set reveals a U-shaped plan that has been the target of several modern and contemporary interventions. With two towers flanking the main façade, the monastery was restored after its acquisition in 1923, by Ezequiel de Campos, who besides restoring the north and east wing of the monastery, proceeded to build a new part in the south following the gothic taste.
