The Benedictine monastery of Vilar de Frades was founded in 566 by Bishop St. Martinho de Dume. From the first Benedictine monastery founded in the 19th century few Romanesque elements remain. In 1425 a congregation of secular canons (Lóios) was founded and settled here. The set was renovated between the 16th and 19th centuries. Noteworthy, in the body of the church, are the remarkable Manueline ribbed vaults and, in the same style, the beautiful main portal. The main altarpiece of the church and valuable tiles from the 18th century are from the Baroque period.
