This chapel owes its name to a misrepresentation of the word "salgas", a traditional industry dating back to Roman times.

Its construction is linked to the figure of Vasco da Gama, according to the tombstone on the main façade. Following the artistic language of the late Gothic and a very common typology in the Alentejo, the church blends the single nave into a chancel.

The star-studded, multi-ribbed ceiling shows the navigator’s coat of arms in the central section.
