The site where the Islamic Castle of Alcácer do Sal was erected was a place of human occupation especially since the Iron Age and until the Modern Period, constituting one of the most significant repositories of archaeological evidence in Portugal. In this place was implanted the convent of Our Lady of Aracaeli, where the archaeological crypt of the castle is integrated. This crypt incorporates and exposes structures from successive historical periods and their corresponding archaeological materials.
