Housing a unique collection in the world of gala and touring vehicles from the 16th to 19th centuries, mostly from the Portuguese Royal House to which were added vehicles from the Church and private collections, the Museu Nacional dos Coches presents an excellent set that allows the visitor to understand the technical and artistic evolution of the animal traction methods of transportation, used by the European courts until the car appeared.
The new building has 70 vehicles on display, with the oldest dating from the 16th century and the most recent being a 19th-century Mala-Posta. In addition to the collection of horse-pulled vehicles, the Museum also holds a set of pieces that were used in gala processions, and others related to the art of chivalry and equestrian games, as well as a collection of portraits of the Portuguese Royal Family.
