The Arquivo Distrital de Viseu was created by Decree-Law no. 20803 of January 22, 1932, and under the terms of its paragraph 3 has the aim of “collecting, installing, inventorying and supplying scholars with the right to consult the following documentary nuclei: a) Cartularies and other codices, parchments and loose papers from the notary offices of Sé and Cabido; b) Documents from the Ecclesiastical Chamber; c) Parish offices; d) Notary offices; e) Judicial registry offices (criminal, civil and closed orphanage cases); f) Papers from extinct monasteries; g) Documents of religious congregations extinct in 1911; h) Papers from extinguished offices and terminated services; i) All other documents that, under the general law of the country, must be gathered at the State's archives”.
Until 1962, it was located in one of the towers of the old wall, next to the gallery connected to the upper cloisters of the Cathedral. Since May 5, 1962, it occupies 3 floors (2 partially) of the building known as Casa Amarela, in Largo de Santa Cristina or Alves Martins.
On June 30, 2015, a protocol was signed between the Municipality of Viseu and the Direção-Geral do Livro, dos Arquivos e das Bibliotecas for the requalification of the building called “Casa Amarela”, and the expansion of the facilities of the Arquivo Distrital de Viseu into the adjoining municipal building facing Rua João Mendes, with the aim of:
Provide ADVIS with facilities that respond to its needs and functionalities as the body in charge of protecting and enhancing the archival heritage under its care, and promoting the identity and culture of its region;
To satisfy the cultural, technical and security requirements of such a service.

Closed on national holidays and on September 21, municipal holiday.
