The Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema is the national body whose mission is to safeguard and publicize the cinematographic heritage. The Cinemateca's first dedicated room, aimed at exhibiting its activity, was inaugurated in 1956. The building located at Rua Barata Salgueiro nº 39 was acquired in 1979, and a cinema, which would be inaugurated in 1980, was built in the old gardens of the house. The house was restored in 2001-2002 and the first cinema demolished. Two new ones were built in its place and inaugurated in January 2003, alongside a museum space in 39 Steps, temporary exhibition rooms, new deposits, new archives, a restaurant, and a bookstore. In 1996, Cinemateca opened a modern conservation center on the outskirts of Lisbon, which serves currently as the basis for all preservation, technical research and access activities, including the use of new technologies.
