Find out more: MUSICAL-MENTE
The third edition of MUSICAL-MENTE brings to the São Bento da Vitória Monastery a monographical triptych which draws its inspiration from the idea(s) of freedom, as the commemorations of the Carnation Revolution’s 50th anniversary draw near.
The concerts will be preceded by political preludes, inviting us to meditate on the connections between art and politics. Rui Moreira, the Mayor of Porto, will present the first prelude, in his quality as a man of culture. From November 2023 to March 2024, we will look at the creative genius of three composers within the context of the political regimes of their time: Ludwig van Beethoven’s absolute, Illuminism-inspired freedom, Dmitri Shostakovich’s repressed, Soviet-subjugated freedom, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s exiled freedom, gained by escaping Nazism.
In this first concert, pianist and cycle curator Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro will join German violinist Stephan Picard and Dutch cellist Quirine Viersen to perform two of Beethoven’s Piano Trios, crucial pieces in the composer’s chamber legacy. With the principle of freedom at its core, Beethoven’s music remains connected to a high humanism. Such is the enlightened beginning of MUSICAL-MENTE’s third cycle.
